Bet on Cobalt was a Twitch-based event created on January 19th, 2016[1] to promote the release of Cobalt. The event was run by Oxeye Game Studio and Mojang on the Twitch account "bot_cobalt"[2], and lasted until February 2nd, 2016; the release date of Cobalt.

Bet on Cobalt is a crowd-control simulated gambling experience[3] based on the Team Strike game mode in Cobalt.

Operation

Bet on Cobalt is a crowd-controlled IRC bot for Twitch, initialized when the PC version of Cobalt is launched with the launch argument "-ircbot". Bet on Cobalt acquires the information necessary for connecting to Twitch chat via IRC through a twitch.sfg file the operator creates. When viewers watch the stream on Twitch, they acquire Volts; a currency that enables them to participate and engage with the game, and bet on the outcomes of bot matches.

Gameplay[3]

Bet on Cobalt has 4 gameplay phases. Betting, Round, Payouts, and Pause.

Betting

The betting phase is the first game phase. Bots purchase their classes from the Team Strike menu, and the players in the audience make bets on the outcome of the following round. The following kinds of bets can be made:

  • Team bets (Red, Blue, Green, and Purple)
  • Achievement Bets (Combo, Whole, Multi, and Ace.)

Players can also spend to Fund the Special, which unleashes one of a variety of effects, including granting items to all bots, activating one of the Raid effects from Survival mode, and more. Odds displayed during the betting phase are calculated with a formula called CABS (Cobalt-Automated-Bookie-System). CABS takes into account previous bets placed, bot performance across prior rounds, and a number of other unknown variables. By default, the betting phase lasts for 45 seconds.

Round

The round phase initiates when betting has concluded. The bots duke it out until there is only one team left standing. The largest bets are placed around the edges of the screen. Viewers can spend Volts to name one of the bots competing, or to make a bot speak in Cobalt's in-game chat for all other viewers to see.

Payouts

Once a round concludes, players who bet are paid out their winnings. The top payouts and losses per round are displayed to all viewers before the start of the next betting phase. Participation bonuses, if applicable, are also listed during this phase.

Pause

The pause is a 60 second gap between rounds. A list with the richest players, and a list with the players who has the highest value flares, are displayed during the pause. During the pause, a shop with 7 flair offers of limited stock is opened. Viewers can purchase flairs with Volts. There are 5 distinct types of flair with different varieties, these are:

  • Username Prefix's (adds a prefix to your username which shows up in chat and in game)
  • Username Suffix's (adds a suffix to your username which shows up in chat and in game)
  • Username tint (changes the color of your username in chat and in game
  • Username emoji (appends a smiley face to the end of your username)
  • Winning jingle (plays a jingle in-game when your bet is the highest winning bet)

During the pause, map voting is open. Viewers can spend Volts to weigh the odds in favor of the map they want to be played next. Once the 60 second timer is up, the map with the most Volts spent is the map that gets selected to play next. If there is a tie, one of the maps tied with the highest amount of Volts spent are selected at random. The pause ends, the next map is loaded, and the game starts again.
